Rigorous
and constant quality oversight by an official agency has resulted
in the designation “Label Rouge” for the high quality
green lentils from Berry. This is the very first “Label Rouge”
quality designation awarded for a dry vegetable. The green lentils
from Berry are also protected by the “Identification Géographique
Protégée” (IGP) based on the reputation of the
product and on its high quality characteristics derived from the
local soil.
A
group of 40 lentils growers from the Champagne Berrichonne area
in the Berry region of central France have formed “Cibèle”
(Compagnie Interprofessionnelle des Producteurs de Lentilles Vertes
du Berry) to produce the “Label Rouge” green lentils
from Berry. Lentils grown in the local Berry soil have a mild flavor
with a hint of chestnut taste.
Green
lentils from Berry have important nutritional value. Rich in fiber
and group B vitamins, the green lentils are also an excellent source
of minerals, especially calcium and iron. Green lentils from Berry
may be prepared in a variety of ways. Chefs from the Berry region
prepare them with art, taste and originality.
